Android Apps for students

Since the arrival of iOS and iPhones, Android apps haven’t been given nearly the amount of attention they deserve. It’s true, iOS apps are beautiful and functional, but Android users have access to great apps as well, and plenty of them. Especially with Google Nexus and soon Android Silver, Android isn’t going away any time soon. With that being said, we wanted to highlight some of the best apps we’ve come across for  students.

Tasker

From settings to messaging, Tasker offers total automation on your smart phone. Essentially a programming tool, this Android app lets you set your own triggers based on your environment. Tasker can detect when you’re at the library, for instance, and enable or disable certain settings on your phone so it adapts to where you are. It can launch apps automatically and perform actions with those apps.
Tasker
Yes, this app sounds like a miracle but it is for the more advanced smartphone users. For those who like a challenge, Tasker is not only fun to play with but one of the most powerful tools for Android. Head over to their website to download a free 7-day trial.

Mint

Dollar tacos or prime rib? There are many different ways to saving money in college, but with Mint financial decisions just got much easier. One of the best financial management apps we’ve come across, Mint keeps track of your budgeting while you’re on the go. View up-to-date information about your accounts, check your budgets, and edit transactions information right on the app.
Mint
Worried about your personal information? The Mint app is password protected, so if you happen to lose your phone, no one will be able to see how much you make or what you spent (or didn’t spend) on textbooks.

 Studious

With Studious, forgetting assignments will be a thing of the past. This simple Android app reminds you when tests are coming up and when assignments are due. One of the most unique features of Studious is its ability to automatically silence your phone in class – right as you walk through the door. To set this up, all you need to do is import your class locations.

SlideShare

Recently acquired by LinkedIn, the presentation-hosting platform has finally delivered a mobile Android app. But instead of creating or uploading new files, the app revolves around viewing, sharing, and saving for offline access. With SlideShare you can view presentations whether you’re commuting, in class, or at the gym.

 WolframAlpha

“Remember the Star Trek computer? It’s finally happening – with Wolfram Alpha”. Unlike a traditional search engine though, Wolfram Alpha doesn’t search the Web for results but relies on its own curated knowledge base – compiled from specific data sources and its computational ability – to compute answers and generate reports instantly. With topics ranging from matrices and astrophysics to stock data and social statistics, WolframAlpha is a must-have Android app and natural companion for every student.

You can also transform handwriting into other note types. if you want to add a chart or table to your notes, for example, you can go from typing to handwriting and then back to typing, making your notes that much more thorough and useful.

Mathway

Oh yes, your math homework or tests may be quite challenging. It is so easy to stuck trying to find the right answer. Try Mathway—the mobile application that will guide you step-by-step while you search for algebra, geometry, or any other math solution. Enter your task into the application, and check if your solution is the same with one offered.

EasyBib

What is the most difficult stage of essay writing? The majority of college students would probably say: creating a list of citations (do not forget that you have to know MLA or APA style to format it). If you are one of these students, EasyBib is the right app for you to download. Just enter a book’s title and get the right citation! All you have to do is copy this citation into your bibliography.

SelfControl

College students are so easily distracted from the studying process! They can’t live without social networks, they always need to check new photos of their friends on Facebook, or share their mood with the world during a lecture. To avoid such distractions, the SelfControl application has been created: it blocks certain websites that can distract you from studying, and it does it for a set amount of time. So, when a lecture is finished, you are welcome to come back to your fave websites again!

Andie graph best college appsAndie Graph

First up is Andie Graph and this is one seriously underrated calculator app. Using this, your graphing calculator, and these instructions, you can have a completely functional graphing calculator on your phone or tablet to take with you anywhere. That’s one less piece of equipment to carry around and fewer batteries to buy. This is a lifesaver for math students.

CamScanner

CamScanner is more of a productivity tool but it can come in handy for almost any college student. Using this, you can scan various documents (lecture notes, registration forms, study guides, homework) and save them to your device for later use. The tech behind it is solid and it’s very simple to use overall. There is even built-in functionality for sharing and for faxing, in the unlikely event that you need to fax something.

Udemy

Udemy wants to be a university-replacement app but it’s still a valuable resource for college students. It has classes that you can take to freshen up on topics or learn new ones. In college, you may need a little extra help learning some concepts in some areas and Udemy is perfect for that sort of learning. The classes can get a bit expensive but there are plenty of cheaper and free ones to choose from. It’s worth a shot if you need a little supplemental learning.

Wikipedia

Most colleges frown upon Wikipedia thanks to its crowd sourced knowledge base. However, This is an invaluable tool to help students get started on a project. For instance, if you’re researching the Civil War, you can find the basics on Wikipedia and it’ll help give you an idea of where to go from there. The mobile site is actually better than any app available right now so we recommend using a browser to check that out.
