Android Apps for students

Since the arrival of iOS and iPhones, Android apps haven’t been given nearly the amount of attention they deserve. It’s true, iOS apps are beautiful and functional, but Android users have access to great apps as well, and plenty of them. Especially with Google Nexus and soon Android Silver, Android isn’t going away any time soon. With that being said, we wanted to highlight some of the best apps we’ve come across for  students.

Tasker

From settings to messaging, Tasker offers total automation on your smart phone. Essentially a programming tool, this Android app lets you set your own triggers based on your environment. Tasker can detect when you’re at the library, for instance, and enable or disable certain settings on your phone so it adapts to where you are. It can launch apps automatically and perform actions with those apps.
Tasker
Yes, this app sounds like a miracle but it is for the more advanced smartphone users. For those who like a challenge, Tasker is not only fun to play with but one of the most powerful tools for Android. Head over to their website to download a free 7-day trial.

 Studious

With Studious, forgetting assignments will be a thing of the past. This simple Android app reminds you when tests are coming up and when assignments are due. One of the most unique features of Studious is its ability to automatically silence your phone in class – right as you walk through the door. To set this up, all you need to do is import your class locations.

 WolframAlpha

“Remember the Star Trek computer? It’s finally happening – with Wolfram Alpha”. The majority of college students would probably say: creating a list of citations (do not forget that you have to know MLA or APA style to format it). If you are one of these students, EasyBib is the right app for you to download. Just enter a book’s title and get the right citation! All you have to do is copy this citation into your bibliography.

SelfControl

College students are so easily distracted from the studying process! They can’t live without social networks, they always need to check new photos of their friends on Facebook, or share their mood with the world during a lecture. To avoid such distractions, the SelfControl application has been created: it blocks certain websites that can distract you from studying, and it does it for a set amount of time. Andie graph best college appsAndie Graph

First up is Andie Graph and this is one seriously underrated calculator app. Using this, your graphing calculator, and these instructions, you can have a completely functional graphing calculator on your phone or tablet to take with you anywhere. CamScanner

CamScanner is more of a productivity tool but it can come in handy for almost any college student. Using this, you can scan various documents (lecture notes, registration forms, study guides, homework) and save them to your device for later use. The tech behind it is solid and it’s very simple to use overall. There is even built-in functionality for sharing and for faxing, in the unlikely event that you need to fax something.

Udemy

Udemy wants to be a university-replacement app but it’s still a valuable resource for college students. It has classes that you can take to freshen up on topics or learn new ones. In college, you may need a little extra help learning some concepts in some areas and Udemy is perfect for that sort of learning. The classes can get a bit expensive but there are plenty of cheaper and free ones to choose from. It’s worth a shot if you need a little supplemental learning.

Wikipedia

Most colleges frown upon Wikipedia thanks to its crowd sourced knowledge base. However, This is an invaluable tool to help students get started on a project. For instance, if you’re researching the Civil War, you can find the basics on Wikipedia and it’ll help give you an idea of where to go from there. The mobile site is actually better than any app available right now so we recommend using a browser to check that out.

10 Free Google Chrome Extensions Teachers Should Try

If you use Google Chrome as your go-to web browser, you may have seen a little icon for the ‘Store’ (like what you see on the right) when you attempt to open a new tab. Never clicked that? Only clicked that once or twice but never took the plunge into the wild world of the Chrome Web Store? In an effort to help you truly surface the best Google Chrome extensions for teachers of all stripes, I thought it might be useful to showcase some of my favorites.
I’m a recent Google Chrome convert. I used Mozilla Firefox for several years because it actually worked better with WordPress (which is what Edudemic is built on). You could resize images just by clicking on them. That was the biggest benefit of Firefox. However, it was only when I got a new laptop (a MacBook Air I actually returned because it didn’t stay connected to wi-fi … long story) that I tried to import all my Firefox bookmarks over to the new computer.
What a pain.
I had used the bookmark importer on Firefox many times in the past but it just wouldn’t work this time. It was also a big confusing. Instead, I imported everything over to Chrome and then synced it all to the Google cloud. That amorphous and terrifying thing that runs the web. Everything just worked after that. I haven’t gone back to Firefox since.
In any case, my new foray into Google Chrome has let me explore the Chrome Web Store and truly test out some awesome web tools that aren’t available anywhere else. The following tools are some of my personal favorites.

Improving memory for exam

Memorizing all day and not able to recall same when it is most needed, would be the last thing you would want happening to you. It is very important for us humans and specially students to have a memory of grandmaster to excel in our lives. We are here with 10 simple yet strong tips to help you improve your memory and trick your brain to memorize more and recall information quickly.
  1. Do Some Exercise
481561053
Our brain is like a machine, the better maintenance we do, the less wear and tear we see. For the well functional brain and better maintenance of the machinery, it is very important to exercise. Studies have revealed that a 20mins exercise can dramatically improve your brain power and memory. You know now, the best thing to do before your examination start – walk atleast 20mins and you’ll see improvement in your performance.
  1. Have Proper Sleep on the Night Before Exams
good night sleep
Sleeping is very important for your brain functionalities. For a better memory, it is highly advisable to atleast take a power nap of 40-45mins. The nap offers enough time for the brain to assimilate all the learning and move it to brain’s long-term memory storage – hippocampus. Sleeping also improves retrieval of information stored in your brain and thus you don’t have to put that extra effort to recall the difficult-to-remember history dates or irky mathematics formulae
  1. Take Regular Breaks
Take A Break
Taking short breaks during your study hours is always advisable – it helps you concentrate and retain the learning for a longer time. While we say take breaks, we literally mean breaks and not distraction.  SMSs, emails, and checking your social accounts are complete distraction. Instead, we would suggest you to lie down, listen to your favorite music and relax for a while.
  1. Read Aloud to Yourself
read aloud
What we have learned from our elders is to read and doing it again and again is the key to memorize something. We just want to add our five cents – reading out aloud to yourself fetches you far great results than just reading it repeatedly. When we read, we use only visual pathway to make the memory, but when we read aloud, we add the auditory pathway as well.  Thus, reading aloud has reinforced pathways to our memory and help us retain the learning for a longer duration.
  1. Practice & Practice Some More
practice
Try solving as many problems you can before exams and don’t forget to keep a tap on your timings – this prepares your brain to search for relevant information & retrieve them in no time when needed. Try solving previous year question papers and create exam-like situations – This will help your brain to understand your abilities to respond to the stress and retrieve the information quickly.
  1. Use Flashcards to Aid Your Memory
flashcards
Flashcards are small cards with information to be memorized written on them. These cards are especially useful in memorizing names, dates, definitions, equations, formulas and vocabulary words. Flashcards work on improving your memory via quick and regular review of the information shared on them.
  1. Create Mental Maps and Brain Dumps
mind map
A mental map is a visual representation of all the thoughts related to a main idea, preferably drawn by hands for organizing and understanding information. This works very well in enhancing your memory as the idea to be memorized is correlated to various well-memorized stuffs, it includes thorough understanding of the concepts, involves creativity and has visual pathway to your memory. Mental maps make it easier for your brain to create connections between the information and recall it quickly.
  1. Teach What You Have Learned
girl_teaching
When you try to teach what you have learned, you need thorough understanding of the concepts, when you understand something thoroughly, it becomes easy for your brain to recall it. Teaching is thus considered as one of the best tools for cementing our learning and memory.
  1. Revise for Better Output
revision
Re-reading the concepts just a couple of hours before you head for the examinations, recapitulate it and helps your brain retrieve it from the hippocampus. This re-reading is also stored afresh in your brain’s prefrontal cortex and makes it easier to recall during the examination.
  1. Meditate
meditating
Practicing meditation has been called the best way to de-stress and concentrate. Studies have also found that meditation changes the functions and physical structures of your brain positively – it helps in increasing the attention span, improved memory and sharpen the focus.
We know it for sure, these 10 tips, when followed religiously, will help you overcome the concerns with bad memory, forgetfulness and lack of attention and will give you a Grandmaster`s Memory.
